Analysis of a rock video (Bloodmeat - Protest the Hero)

Camera
This video is particularly low budget as it is very easy to create as it is only filmed and played in on location that is not hard to come by. It opens with an establishing shot that shows the artists simply in a warehouse. There is an extensive use of close ups when the guitarists are playing, this is to promote the guitarists as they are playing technical songs designed to entice the audience. Many close ups of each member of the band through fast paced shots when the bands music got faster.
Mis-en-scene
There is a very small amount of props in the the setting except for the instruments used by the band. This is obviously to show off how good the different musicians are at what they do, when they are doing something that is harder or more technical theyare shown to be of high status by the camera with nothing distracting in the background.
Editing
fast paced editting is used when the faster parts of the song come in. This is a good way of making it seem that there is more action going on than there actually is.

analysis of a rock video (Bloodmeat - Protest the Hero)

Analysis of a rock video (Sound of Truth - As I Lay Dying)

camera
The way this video has been filmed it has a very filmic type of setting, with a vast amount of actors used to have a story line shown, As I Lay Dying is only shown on a rooftop. This is designed to give the idea that the song has been made for a film or for a part of a film. The use of close ups of people having angry expressions empowers the feeling behind a lot of metal music. Establishing shots show that this is quite a high budget music video as they have managed to create a futuristic type effect.

Mise-en-scene
There are many props that are used throughout the story line and many for the band. Obviously the band have been filmed in the rain or artificial rain and are scene playing there expensive guitars in the rain show a rock star arrogance that they are rich and have money to spare. The fact that characters have been put at a low status within the video show that they are living under a dictatorship, this is shown purely from the fact that everyone that looks lower class is listening to a broadcast from a more powerful individual. The fact that people are wearing weird uniform that is not present in this day shows that the story line is set in the future. The constant use of rain shows off the darkness that is associated with the metal music. Low key lighting is also used to enforce this.

Performance
The fact that the people acting within the video are all actual actors the story becomes convincing and interesting unlike a lot of music videos that are made. The viewer can feel the sense of an overthrow of power through the story which is extremely effective as again metal music is about being different and not being the same as normal popular music. As i Lay Dying like most metal bands get into the music and start head banging which is something that there listeners would use to express there ways of liking the music. Again like other bands they are using this to appeal to there audience as audience members feel like they want to head bang along with the band.
Editing
There are a lot of parts were editing is used to composite videos into things for example in the picture above the crowd are being shown as if the viewer is looking at them through a raindrop. This is really effective as they are adding things that are keeping the viewer interested. Although this is a high budget film certain ideas like doing this to a shot can help people with low budget ideas to keep there audience interested. The editing has also been put in time with each shot changing on one of the harder played beats on the drums. There are a lot of flashing edits used as well for example there is the use of a flash through the solo behind the guitarist that looks a bit like lightning but has been put in through the use of editing.

low budget video analysis (seville & Devanda Bernheart)

Camera
There are a lot of hand held shots used through out the whole video as they are trying to capture a walk ad a ride through london town as if they were tourists. The camera is used as like a tourist would be using a handheld camera. There are quite a lot of establishing shots that are used to make the viewer aware that they are in London town and to show the area that they are in. There are a few close ups of things that they are doing like for instance there is a close up of the photo that they find at the end of the video.

Mise-en-scene
The song is about being around a town so the choice of London is very good. The fact that the artists are dressed in 1800 type wear makes the viewer think of the time when london was refereed to as a town, this is good for the song. There costume also makes them stand out from the crowd that they are walking through, this is a great way of showing that the artist is different to other artists.

Performance
The whole song is performed as a happy go lucky performance making the viewer feel that they are enjoying themselves. The dancing and happy expressions gives the whole video an upbeat feeling that is good for making the video feel happy. The artists also look at the camera a lot that makes the viewer feel like they are being performed to.

Editing
As this is a low budget video there does not seem to be a vast amount of complicated editing techniques used. There seems to be a lot of jump cuts and a couple of fades, as it is low budget there is nothing two advanced. The only editing that is mostly used is lip syncing the performer to the video.

analysis of low budget video (Tunng - Jenny Again)

Camera
This video uses a lot of efective but low budget shots, there are many shots that focus on fields that are in blossom or wood like areas, these scenes are naturally pretty and with large establishing shots they capture this very well. There are also closeup shots that slowly reveal areas that are being filmed releasing a story that has to be thought out by the viewer. The camera shots aid the abstract story line through being of scenes that are hard to identify.

Mise-en-scene
There has been a use of different props in this video in order to get the viewer to start thinking about what is going on. The use of things like a forensic suit and other such things like a red top that the artist is wearing signifies that there could be a murder even though it is never confirmed. The choice of set is good as it draws in the viewer by making the scenes desirable places to be.

performance
The different people involved in the video hold hands and show that they are in a relationship which is a trigger to get the story going and add more questions to the viewers mind. The singer within the video uses his eyes to show pain and sadness which is really good for adding to the story that is going on.

Editting
edditing is not used as extensively as other videos as it is low budget. There use of good shots meant that there was no need for good editting techniques. There are mostly jump cuts used within the video.

Tunng- Jenny so Shy ( low budget video analysis)

scouting for girls analysis

camera

The use of the camera has been well thought out and used with the rule of thirds. There are several shots were there are blured images infront of the camera to the left or right of the frame and the lead singer or one of the other people from the group in the middle of the shot. There is also an exstensive use of close ups of the artists playing there instruments and performing there song. There are a few establishing shots that are also chucked into the music video as they are showing weird things going on.

mise-en-scene

This music video is unlike most other music videos, it has been made after great thought to what will be inside each shot with each shot tellling a small story. For example the opening shot has got a vast amount of blue and yellow props which have nothing to do with the song but make the viewer think. There are also many props to do with being famous for example there are, video's, magazines, stage lights, TV remotes, guitars etc. This has had a lot of thought as they obviously want people to watchh there video and be interested about the storyline that is going on throughout the video.

Performance

Each artist in this videwo are moving along with there music and are moving in time with it mostly when they have there instruments. There are lots of moments when the artists are just moving around and instead of performing there music they are acting out the snall story that is present through-out the video.

Editing

Editing has been used extensivley in this video as there are many pieces were editing is needed to make a scene work. for example there is a piece at trhe end of the video were some one is reaching out of the tv and picking up a picture, this would of had to have been editted exrensively in order for it to work. There are lots of times were the drums, piano and bass guitar close ups are going through a cycle of close up shots, each of these instruments will have been editted in so that it looks exactly in time with the music.

Uk top 40 analysis ( Scouting for girls - famous)

Top 40 analysis, roll deep-good times

camera
There is a vast use of close ups that are used when focusing on females and mainly the main female as the video is trying to show off the lifestyle of a male pop star. There are close ups of the main femal singer giving her the ability to show that she is the singer. The handheld camera with her in the back of the taxi is an extremely low budget idea that has worked really effectively. There is a vast use of high angle and low angle shots that are used to show the girls off by either focusing on there bodys or there faces.
mise-en-scene
The dancers that are involved in this video are all dressed up to show off there femininity, this has been planned by the director as they want to appeal to men as well as women. Women and men will both appeal to the night club scene that has been chosen to set the video. Another reason for this is to appeal to people playing there music at parties as it is being promoted as a party style of music.
Performance
The artists are all moving in time with the song that is being performed, there is not much asked of the artists performance wise as they just need to perform the song. They make up for this by having scenes with everyone dancing around promoting the dance scene that is associated with the song genre. There are shots of some dancers doing more complicated moves that are used to show people getting more into the music.
Editing
There is a vast amount of fast jump cuts used to show how the fast music is triggering energetic movements from the listeners. The use of slow motion impowers this thought by showing more intense dance moves and feminine ladies that are in the club scene that they have created. There are slight flashing scenes used to give the club feel when different shots are being put together.

Low budget video ideas in Composure (ABR)

camera use:
There are several low budget ideas in this video as this is a generally low budget video. There is a vast use of handheld shot throughout the entire video, this is used to give the same effect as the music through bouncing around in time with the music and following the artists movements. another low budget concept is that of using low angle shots. This is a basic idea that is used to herald the artist and there work. It could also be possible to argue that they are putting the viewer in a live audiences point of view.

mise-en-scene
The artists within the music video are all dressed in a way that is suited to there audience. The artists appeal to there audience by wearing the same sort of clothing that people listening to them would. They are also given high end instruments to play as it looks professional and makes the band more appealing as having expensive instruments shows viewers that they have fame and money.

Performance
The band have been made to perform along to the music that they are creating, this involves head banging in time with each other, an excessive use of microphone skills such as whipping the lead to make it spiral. Things like this are put in slow motion to show the skill that is involved with it, guitarists are always thrusting there guitars in-front of them to show off the things that they are playing and the drummer has shots that slowly track in while he is involved in drum solos etc.

Editing
There is a vast use of slow motion used within the video that is very easy for a person to create yet gives an effect of great skill when the artist is doing a stage move. The editor has used a lot of this in order to put people in a state of mass appreciation for what the performer is doing. The editor also has edited the story that is going along with the song so that things like punches thrown are in time with the music. This is a simple but very effective thing to do.
